I might be kind of dense, I don't really know exactly what "Black in White" is supposed to symbolize. Does it refer to a dream? Your translation doesn't exactly help ;) I'm getting the impression that he is a bit like Elvis Costello (at his best) or Peter Hammill lyrically, in that many words are metaphors and may reference other points of culture, something that must be hell on translators :)

Either way - one of my favorite songs on Enola. Do you know the name of the Oriental percussion instrument that's used here? It seems to have been inspired by Hosono.

I think it's really up to every listener's interpretation. The reference to dreams in the song does suggest this is a description of a dream. I get a very stark visual of black ships set against a white background and then white stars against a black sky, kind of like a shadow play (which, incidentally, Mr. Hirasawa's beloved Thailand is also famous for.) Very surreal!

Symbolism, though: I tend to read it as a typical "Hirasawa Paradox" song with the impact coming from finding "black" (the absence of light) within "white" (the extreme fullness of light), and vice versa. If you accept that Mr. Hirasawa likes Jungian psychology, then you can take it further and argue that the song is about the Shadow or unconscious, repressed self. Jung wrote that "[e]veryone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is." I'm really no scholar of Jung, but I can see this working in the song as a sort of acknowledgment of one's shadow self, first through fear, then through acceptance. The line "The solemnly burning fire is something you should have seen before  White in black" is the key, I think.

But that's just my take on it.

And nope, no idea what the instrument is, but it sounds lovely. :)
