平沢進 -「SIAM LIGHTS」/ Hirasawa Susumu - "Siam Lights" Lyrics

"Siam Lights" is from Mr. Hirasawa's second post-Thailand solo album, Siren. Siam being an old name for Thailand and (apparently) a neighborhood in Bangkok, it's clearly drawn from Mr. Hirasawa's experiences in Thailand. The song reappeared on the tribute album Switched-on Lotus, which makes me think it has some personal significance to him. The sound alone is beautiful, but the lyrics are filled with an almost terrible longing and when his voice soars in the refrain, it's heartbreaking. I simply love these sorts of gentle, powerful songs he makes every now and again.

>In Mr. Hirasawa's SP-2 book, there is a very...strange...section about the cremation of a friend of his who passed away. It's written very strangely and chaotically, almost like it's describing the hallucination of someone so lost in grief they can't deal with reality. I can't help but get a similar feeling from this song--the singer seems emotionally numb and lost, still hoping to find the lost "you" somewhere. In my mind, he's "unable to remember all at once" and clings to the memories of each day with "you" one by one as they fall down like tears. And "you" is sleeping--resting in eternal slumber, if you will--but as "you" leaves this world behind, the singer finds solace in the days ahead, knowing they're a gift from heaven. Or something.

But if you'd prefer it less depressing, I do think you can interpret it as a song of longing for someone far away. That doesn't diminish the beauty of the song one bit. As usual, it's all up to interpretation. ^^

Hirasawa Susumu - "Siam Lights"

Yume no muki kara fuku to iu
Moeru iro no kaze ga kite
Niwaka ni wa omoidasenu mama
Itsu kara kimi wa koko de nemuru?

Sora no mienai mado o ake
Hoshi no yure ni kiku oto wa
Ima sugu ni todoku hazu na no ni
Haruka na kimi wa doko ni nemuru?

Meguru hi ga tooku shima kara Hitotsu dake ochite kuru
Shiranai kimi no yume kara Hitotsu zutsu ochite kuru

Kado o magareba mata aeru
Moeru iro no kage o shita
Inishie no uta utau hito ga
Asu ni wa kimi o tsure noboru

Meguru hi ga tooku shima kara Hitotsu dake ochite kuru
Shiranai kimi no yume kara Hitotsu zutsu ochite kuru

Meguru hi ga tooku shima kara Hitotsu dake ochite kuru
Shiranai kimi no yume kara Hitotsu zutsu ochite kuru

Hirasawa Susumu - "Siam Lights"

They say it blows from the direction of dreams,
This wind of burning color that comes
Still unable to remember all at once
Since when do you sleep here?

Open the window through which you can't see the sky
The sound I hear in the flickering of the stars
Ought to reach you immediately
But where do you, so distant, sleep?

From a faraway island, just one coming day falls down to me
From your unknown dream, the days come falling down one by one

If I turn the corner, I could meet you again
A person casting a shadow of burning color
Who sings an ancient song
Will take you away and ascend with you tomorrow

From a faraway island, just one coming day falls down to me
From your unknown dream, the days come falling down one by one

From a faraway island, just one coming day falls down to me
From your unknown dream, the days come falling down one by one
